Looking for things to do in Portobello?

Portobello has it all; sea, sand, character and community. Whether you’re lucky enough to live there, or you’re coming from elsewhere in Edinburgh, it’s a fab place to visit.

Here are our ‘5 Great Things To Do In Portobello’ This Week:

1. GET CREATIVE

Furniture Painting in PortobelloSaturday 27th August brings a Furniture Painting Workshop to Tribe Porty. Create beautiful upcycled furniture for your home and for gifts!

Bring your own furniture, or they will provide one for £20. Advanced booking is recommended so email info@upcycledworld.com for further details.

2. RELAX AT THE BEACH BUSK

Portobello Beach Busk
After painting your furniture, why not listen to some incredible local sounds at this year’s Big Beach Busk?

The mile along the Promenade will come alive with musicians of all kinds – from one man bands to orchestras.

There’s also a sand castle competition for those with a competitive streak!

3. SMELL THE FLOWERS

Musselburgh Flower ShowYes, it’s just down the road in Musselburgh, but this is a lovely little event for those who will miss Edinburgh’s gorgeous flowers once Autumn comes.

Musselburgh Horticultural Society Flower Show is taking place on Saturday, and in addition to beautiful flowers there will also be cakes and stalls to enjoy.

4. STRETCH THOSE BRAIN MUSCLES

SkyLark Pub Quiz PortobelloAt Vintage Vibes we love a good quiz, and every Thursday night at 8pm The Skylark host a great pub quiz with quizmaster Tony Foster.

Book a table, bring a team and have a fab school-night out!

5. MAKE A NEW FRIEND

95bf0b76-7b5e-4677-bd73-870a8a02e185Sounds like you’ve got a busy week ahead? We’re pleased we could help! Now we’d like to ask a wee favour of you…

Not everyone in your local area gets to live as fun and exciting a life as you do.

There are 3,845 people in Portobello and the surrounding area who are aged 65 and over, and of them, 1,392 live alone. That’s over 12% just in and around Portobello.

Of this local group it’s estimated that over 550 only have the TV as their main form of company each week, who have no family or friends to visit them and who struggle to get out by themselves.

These Portobello locals are lonely and isolated, and chronic loneliness has been shown to increase the chances of developing dementia by 64%.

We’re looking to change that. And there’s a way you can help that is right on your doorstep.

We are a charitable service that tackles loneliness by creating long-lasting friendships. We put together people of shared interests, who live locally to one another, for a cup of tea and a natter. Simple as that.

It’s very flexible, you can visit once a month, a fortnight or a week at a time that suits you, and we take time to match you with someone who shares your interests and is easy for you to visit. We have rugby fans rejoicing in shared wins, chess fanatics battling each other, cuddly pooches visiting dog lovers and more.

We’re looking for Portobello locals to sign up and be the difference to someone in your local community.

We can train you and match you in your local area and there’s a great community of volunteers who meet up monthly. It’s that easy.

If you think you could spare a wee bit of time to visit someone in your neighbourhood then get in touch, or come along to our tea party (below) we would love to hear from you.

BONUS EVENT: VINTAGE TEA PARTY ANYONE?

Thursday 25th August, 6.30pm – 8pm – The Tide, Portobello Prom.

We are looking for lovely folks to join our community of volunteers in and around Portobello and Leith. So we’re having a tea party to provide information about volunteering.

If you are interested in developing a friendship with someone over 60 who is lonely and isolated near you, then please do come along for some tea, cake and to find out a little more about volunteering with Vintage Vibes – we work to make it as flexible and fun as possible for our lovely volunteers.

More information here.

Thank you to Portobello & Craigmillar NP for supporting the funding of this event.

From another area of the city?

We would still love to hear from you! We work across Edinburgh to tackle loneliness and are always looking for new volunteers.

Please help us by sharing this post with others.
